Responding to the Global Call
From addressing hunger through ELCA World Hunger to engaging in transformative projects with ELCA Global Mission, Lutheran World Relief, and Lutheran World Federation, we actively participate in initiatives that go beyond geographical boundaries. Join us in contributing to a more interconnected and caring world, where our community's values resonate globally.
ELCA World Hunger
ELCA World Hunger recognizes the universal human right to food and aims to address hunger comprehensively. By providing immediate relief and facilitating long-term, sustainable change through access to resources such as clean water, education, and healthcare, ELCA World Hunger strives to eradicate hunger globally. This initiative prioritizes building relationships with local communities to identify needs and implement effective solutions. Partnering with organizations like Bread for the World, Church World Service, and Lutheran World Relief, ELCA reaches more places effectively, while also engaging in education and advocacy to combat the root causes of poverty. Through this multifaceted approach, ELCA World Hunger addresses hunger both domestically and globally.
ELCA Global Mission
ELCA Global Mission embodies the essence of walking with Christ, seeking to participate in God's reconciling mission through proclamation and service alongside more than 80 companion churches worldwide. By fostering mutually inclusive, vulnerable, empowering, and sustainable relationships, ELCA Global Mission addresses root causes of poverty and hunger, fights HIV and AIDS, promotes peace-building, and equips individuals to spread the gospel globally. Through stewarding relationships, providing grants and personnel, funding sustainable projects, and facilitating international disaster responses, ELCA Global Mission strengthens the worldwide Lutheran community and empowers individuals for faithful global engagement. As an ELCA member, you can explore opportunities to serve as a missionary, engage in companion synod relationships, support global mission initiatives, and access resources for global engagement.
Lutheran World Relief
Lutheran World Relief, rooted in Lutheran theology and founded by Lutherans in the United States after World War II, envisions a world where all individuals can lead dignified lives. Working globally, regardless of race, religion, or nationality, Lutheran World Relief provides aid in emergencies, assists families in rebuilding their lives, and partners with communities to develop rural economies. Their mission, inspired by God's love for all people, aims to eradicate poverty, injustice, and human suffering. Through inclusive, disruptive, interconnected, and agile approaches, they address complex challenges and empower communities to create sustainable solutions. Embracing their Lutheran identity, they believe in serving neighbors with integrity, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of all individuals. With a history spanning nearly 75 years, Lutheran World Relief continues to provide vital support to some of the world's poorest communities in East and West Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, fostering resilience and enabling communities to thrive.
Lutheran World Federation
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is a global communion of churches in the Lutheran tradition united in their mission for a just, peaceful, and reconciled world. Comprising 150 member churches representing over 75.5 million people across 99 countries, the LWF operates under a vision of being "Liberated by God’s grace, a communion in Christ, living and working together for a just, peaceful, and reconciled world." Upholding values such as dignity, justice, compassion, and respect for diversity, the LWF engages in humanitarian and development work, advocacy, shared witness, and dialogue. With an emphasis on supporting churches' vibrant witness, promoting human dignity, justice, and peace, and assisting those in need, including refugees and internally displaced persons, the LWF strives to equip and resource its member churches to witness to the liberating grace of God. Governed by elected council members and led by President Bishop Henrik Stubkjær and General Secretary Rev. Dr. Anne Burghardt, the LWF commits to transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation in its efforts to advance justice, peace, reconciliation, and dignity worldwide.
ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission
The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program is a transformative initiative that empowers individuals aged 18 to 35 to embark on a profound journey of service, cultural exchange, and faith exploration. Through global accompaniment, YAGM participants are sent to countries worldwide, forming meaningful partnerships with Lutheran World Federation collaborators. This immersive experience fosters a deep understanding of diverse cultures, promotes social justice, and nurtures spiritual growth. As these young adults engage in hands-on community service, they contribute to positive change and build bridges of understanding across borders. The ELCA YAGM program embodies the spirit of global citizenship, equipping young leaders to make a lasting impact in an interconnected world. St. Timothy has helped to send 5 different Young Adults from our congregation since the program's founding in the early 2000s, with the congregation's most recent serving in Jerusalem and the West Bank in 2023.
